by Second_MBA » Tue Oct 23, 2012 11:02 am
A big thanks to ye all who take the time out to provide useful inputs.

Pls evaluate my profile.

Indian, 29 years of age
GMAT score - 750

Work experience - 4.5 years of post MBA experience in an Indian Private Equity Fund as an Associate.
Pre-MBA experience - 1 year experience with a technology startup.

CFA Charterholder
Did a company sponsored exec education module on VC & PE from Harvard in '09.

Undergrad - Top 10 Indian engineering college (Non IIT)
Postgrad - Top 10 Indian MBA School (Non IIM)
CGPA - 3.2 in both under grad and post grad.

Extracurrics - decent extracurricular in college. Recommendations from senior partners in the fund /CFO client. Insignificant NGO work

Looking to do my second MBA to take it to the next level.

What are my chances for schools like H/S/W/Booth/Columbia/LBS ?

Well, you have some great stuff here - good long PE experience along with an amazing GMAT. IT depends also on some other things I don't yes know about you, but I feel like a top program is within your reach.

However, H/S remain a stretch for you. As excellent as your numbers may be, they have the wealth of choice of candidates whose numbers and experience is as great as yours. And your experience needs to have something exceptional in it, especially if they are to choose someone who will do their second MBA over someone who has not yet done one. This exceptional thing could be your goals, your family business, amazing results or promotions, volunteer work, etc. So you need to look for that, but still, the most competitive schools will remain the most competitive.

At Booth, Columbia and LBS you should have a better shot, although still you may want to add another school or two to your list.

Thanks for your inputs Jon, extremely helpful.

Unfortunately I cant think of any other "wow factor" schools for finance/Private Equity - Stern is probably the only other school I can apply to. Don't think MIT Sloan, Kellog et al fit the bill.

Anyway, all that is water under the bridge. The only thing I have under control now - is the essays and the recommendation. Any advice on that - given my profile?

Yes, especially for Harvard: Write super-tight, very professional essays. And show in any way that you can that you are one of the best in your industry, and I mean best in the whole world.

And your recommendations need to be at the same time professional, but also gushing with support.
