This eliminates B, C and E ( we dont need 'it" )

Between A and D

AS BIG AS is wrong construction here Whale can not be as big as 30 feet. ITS HEIGHT can be 30 feet.

D. include the animal known as the killer whale, which can grow as big as 30 feet long and is

i think this was the catch here :- "AS BIG AS is wrong construction here Whale can not be as big as 30 feet. ITS HEIGHT can be 30 feet. "

Don't u guys think that in the original sentence there is some typo in the highlighted portion..."which can grow to be 30 feet long"....

shouldn't it be "upto"...

Please tell what i am missing here ?

When we use upto, we mean till that limit...
eg. He has studied upto the 1oth std... means that he has studied till the 10th std and no more.
But when we use 'to be' , we mean to that extent... so it could be more than that too...

Yes..we generally say something like...mother to be...will do X, Y, Z....

Don't u think that "Mother ....can to be 30 feet long...." is awkward sentence....

i've also stated that the KILLER WHALE IS ABLE TO GROW TO BE 30 FEET.
(WHICH MEANS THAT THE WHALE WILL BE ABLE TO GROW.....)

NOWHERE HAVE I STATED THAT 'THE MOTHER TO BE' IS 30 FEET....

D: as BIG as 30 feet LONG
Here, big and long are redundant.
Since 30 feet refers to a LENGTH, the following would be correct:
as long as 30 feet.
