An army code consists of 4 letters, the first two of which are numbers and the last two are alphabets. Find the total number of codes that can be generated.

A) 84656
B) 60840
C) 56346
D) 67600
E) 86756

i got this one wrong because i started with 1 instead of 0... stupid mistake! so i did 9*9*26*26

Yeah money1119 this is not the formation of a number. It is the formation of codes. so u will have to consider 0 also..otherwise u will loose few army codes..

digits from 0 to 9=10
alphabets=26

repetition is allowed so
10*10*26*26=67600

each of the two numbers can have 10 choices and each alphabet have 26 choice

hence 1st two digits = 10*10

Alphabets =26

hence last two digits = 26* 26

Total = 10*10*26*26

My question is why cant an army code not begin with 0 ?

Are only bank codes allowed a 0 as per the GMAT ?

So then aren't we assuming here that 0 is supposed to be taken into consideration while counting the 1st digit ?

We can also assume tht 0 shouldnt be taken into consideration .

Can someone have a firm stand on this one .

Hey bhumika,
you are right in stating that "We can also assume tht 0 shouldnt be taken into consideration".
In GMAT ,hardly you are asked questions that require external knowledge of such factors.
So,I don't think specifically it is assumed that bank codes are allowed as 0.
I think you won't get this question on the test-day.

This is the firm stand, if it is not explicitly mentioned that 0 is not allowed as the first letter (not digit but letter) we can take it into account. This is because as a number 0514 = 514 and we omit '0' . But 0ABC as code is not equal to ABC as a code

There no such rules and its never specified for these things
I think 0 will surely be included in codes...as they are everywhere...

surely if we are dealing with codes ..it doesn't mean the value of any any number or letter...
we are not dealing with numbers where .. 0345 = 345
codes means 0ABC =/= ABC
so 0 will be included for sure... I don't think GMAT will clarify anything in this regard..its already clear..

It depends, if first letter can NOT be a 0 then we have 9*10*26*26=60840
But if first letter CAN be a 0(which I really doubt) , then we have 10*10*26*26 = 67600

Whats the OA?
