If Nadia Comaneci had not been strictly monitored after the defection of her coach from communist Romania, she could still be living in Romania and will not be living in the United States.

A) she could still be living in Romania and will not be living in the United States

B) she could have continued to live in Romania and cannot have moved to the United States

C) she may still be living in Romania and will not have moved to the United States

D) she will have continued to live in Romania and will not have moved to the United States

E) she would have continued to live in Romania and would not have moved to the United States

You can, for example never foretell what any one man will do, but you can say with precision what an average number will be up to!

Hi vinay1983,

This SC deals with an obvious modification issue, but all of the answers start with "she", so there's no way to use that rule to our advantage.

The rest of the SC deals with a "hypothetical situation": the phrase "If....had not been...." gives us that clue.

Usually, hypothetical situations use the words "were" and "would."

For example: If I were to win the lottery, then I would buy a boat.

Here, we're using a different opening phrase ("if...had not been..."), but we still need the same second phrase ("would")

Final Answer: E

The sentence is talking about the Possibility in Past ; hence usage of future 'will' ( A, C & D) and present perfect 'cannot have moved' (B) is wrong. Hence my Answer is 'E'

What is OA ?

A) she could still be living in Romania and will not be living in the United States.(awkward)
B) she could have continued to live in Romania and cannot have moved to the United States(cannot have moved looks awkward here)

C) she may still be living in Romania and will not have moved to the United States("will not have"moved is wrong tense usage)

D) she will have continued to live in Romania and will not have moved to the United States.("would" should be used)

E) she would have continued to live in Romania and would not have moved to the United States

OA: E
Here as we have a hypothetical situation "if ...had been", so the second part should begin with a would or were. Thus A,B,C,D knocked off.
