Q40:
Insect infestations in certain cotton-growing regions of the world have caused dramatic increases in the price of cotton on the world market. By contrast, the price of soybeans has long remained stable. Knowing that cotton plants mature quickly, many soybean growers in Ortovia plan to cease growing soybeans and begin raising cotton instead, thereby taking advantage of the high price of cotton to increase their income significantly, at least over the next several years.

Which of the following, if true, most seriously weakens the plan’s chances for success?

A. The cost of raising soybeans has increased significantly over the past several years and is expected to continue to climb.
B. Tests of a newly developed, inexpensive pesticide have shown it to be both environmentally safe and effective against the insects that have infested cotton crops.
C. In the past several years, there has been no sharp increase in the demand for cotton and for goods made out of cotton.
D. Few consumers would be willing to pay significantly higher prices for cotton goods than they are now paying.
E. The species of insect that has infested cotton plants has never been known to attack soybean plants.

First - a request - please underline the sentences in SC posts.

Now, the answer for the first problem Q39

imo - C

GMAC prefers active voice over passive voice unless the sentence demands it.

In this case I prefer active and only choices A and C keep the sentence in active voice.

Also, choice C is more concise.

For example - ''into'' is more concise than ''so it would be ''

Also, ''the world’s largest telephone company'' is more concise than ''the largest telephone company in the world''

Second Request - Please post CR problems in the CR section and not in the SC. This would help keep the blog organized.

imo C again for question 40

Conclusion says: many soybean growers in Ortovia plan to cease growing soybeans and begin raising cotton instead, thereby taking advantage of the high price of cotton to increase their income significantly, at least over the next several years.

What does the above gibrish mean?
1) Farmers are thinking of growing cotton
2) cotton prices are high in the market today and farmers intend to sell their cotton for these high prices and make a profit.

To weaken the conclusion we are looking for:
1) Ortovia has too many cotton bugs which would ruin the cotton crop
2) prices for cotton in the market fall (owing to lack of demand or extensive production of cotton)

A. The cost of raising soybeans has increased significantly over the past several years and is expected to continue to climb.
This supports the conclusion - provides a valid reason for the farmers to quit on soybeans. - incorrect

B. Tests of a newly developed, inexpensive pesticide have shown it to be both environmentally safe and effective against the insects that have infested cotton crops.

does not impact the conclusion at all - incorrect

C. In the past several years, there has been no sharp increase in the demand for cotton and for goods made out of cotton.

As there has been no sharp increase in demand, if the farmers of Ortovia do go ahead and grow cotton, there could be extensive cotton in the market, hence bringing the prices of cotton down. This would limit their profit and they will miss their goal of reaping in high profits.

Hence, this answer choice does weaken the conclusion and is therefore the correct answer

D. Few consumers would be willing to pay significantly higher prices for cotton goods than they are now paying.

Farmers are willing to sell the cotton for current high prices and consumers are willing to purchase on the current high prices. - not valid.

E. The species of insect that has infested cotton plants has never been known to attack soybean plants.
Irrelevant

Q 41

imo B

Things to look for:

Tense
Pronoun

(at least these were enough for me)

must use the past tense 'took' which eliminates choices A,C and E

'had taken' is incorrect because there is no action succeeding the completion of translation mentioned in the sentence. Hence, using past perfect tense is incorrect. One must only use past tense here as the action happened in the past.

Now, between B and D

D uses 'it'

translating the Iliad, a work that took seven years until completion and that literary critic Samuel Johnson, Pope’s contemporary, pronounced it as.......

The usage of 'it' is ambiguous i.e. we cannot say for certain that 'it' refers to Iliad. 'It' could refer to the 'work that took seven years' as well.

So, we eliminate D and are left with only B

Agree with rohan on the requests and answers for the sentence correction.

However for the CR ques 40 IMO B

Premise: Infestation caused the cotton prices world wide to increase and has not affected the soybean production.

Conclusion: Farmers are planning to take advantage of the high cotton prices and grow more cotton and cease growing soybeans. That is they hope to earn profit in the coming years.

Now why have the cotton prices increased?
Because of infestation. What if this infestation is reduced or eliminated. Then the cotton prices would go down.

A: Cost of soybeans: out of scope. Infact this strengthens the conclusion as it makes gorwing cotton more profitable.

B: The newly developed pesticides have shown to be effective against insects that have infected the cotton crops.

This means: insects population goes down-->cotton prices go down-->farmers do not benefit from producing cotton. Hence this weakens the conclusion.

C: This option is actually irrelevant since it talks about demand in the past. We need information about the future demand as that is what will affect the profitability not the demand in the past.

D: Again out of scope. We are not discussing the willingness of consumers. Anyways there still exist people who will go and buy the cotton so it is still beneficial for the farmers.

E: Irrelevant.

This problem is testing ''causation''

cause - infestation in cotton crops
effect - high cotton prices

If infestation is stopped/reduced, cotton prices will drop.

choice B proves it!
