Like vs AS, OG 11, Q 122

by arorag » Wed Feb 13, 2008 6:23 pm
More than 30 years ago Dr. Barbara McClintock, the Nobel Prize winner, reported that genes can “jump” as pearls moving mysteriously from one necklace to another.

Correct choice is—like pearls moving mysteriously from one necklace to another.
My questions is why like not as is required. Also can anybody explain me the use of like (preposition) verses as (conjunctions).

"as" is used for comparing clauses. "like" is used for comparing nouns.

Hope that helps !

I did this one two days ago. I took both genes and pearls as nouns so the word like.
