Help! confused about chances, consultants

by rb90 » Fri Nov 05, 2010 2:28 am
Hi!

Here's a brief idea about my profile:
10th grade - 88%

12th grade - 93%

Undergraduate % (till now) - 58 % (with 60% being distinction) from the no.1 commerce college in India

Currently have a month and Semester left in college

Majoring in Finance

Family business: been working here with my father, training under him. Also, been actively involved with the purchase and manfg. dept. of the company ( jewellery manufacturing firm)

GMAT: 710

Short term goals: To get an MBA and streamline and organise the enitre operations of the current company

Long Term Goals: To diversify the family business into more sectors

Reason to get an MBA so soon: I wont be keen on getting an MBA more than 2 years from my graduation (next may), preferring at that point of time to work in the family business , rather than leave it at that point for 2 yrs. So I want the MBA training early on so that i can become independent much earlier and make concrete contributions to the business as soon as possible

Extra curriculars:
Toastmasters International
Volunteer teacher at a school for the underprivileged for the past two months
Was one of the 50 specially invited from the college,by one of the best tyre manfg. companies in the country, to visit the factory of the same .
Represented the college in other colleges ( in a different city) in a Business fest.

Target Schools: ( any 3-4 )
Yale silver scholars
Darden
Chicago Early Career
Carnegie Mellon
MIT Sloan

What are my chances of getting in? Im planning to apply for R2.(maybe even R3 if time is short etc. ). Is my profile lacking anywhere? please help anyone.

I would also like to know how best I can prepare my applications, as in who should i take help from (Veritas, manhattan,Stacy Blackman or any other).
I feel, the selection of the right company to assist me with my application will be very crucial.

Please help me out with the same

Thanks

While I know this isn't what you want to hear, it will be virtually impossible to be admitted into one of those programs directly from undergrad. Schools want you to have professional experience. This is important to show your leadership and management skills and also helps you better contribute to classroom discussions. It is also difficult to have solid LORs without at least a few years of experience. A consulting firm may be able to help you position yourself in the best light and may help you better understand the skills that you need to stress, but, working with a consultant will not guarantee you a spot at a top school!

You have an interesting work story (family business), strong academic performance and a good GMAT score. With an impressive resume, excellent LORs and a good "story" you may have a shot at a top US program in a few years. I'd hate to see you settle for a third tier school just because you are anxious to go now. I believe the experience will be much more valuable for you in a few years when you truly understand the complex dynamics that impact family businesses and business diversification efforts. You are also lucky because with your professional track (family business) you have a little more flexibility and should be able to work at a high level for the next year or two and then apply. You will find yourself much more successful when you have a broader perspective!

Thanks for giving an honest and straightforward opinion.

I know its difficult to get into these schools, but silver scholars is my main focus, because i feel i have a better chance there comparatively . I also know a couple of people who got into the silver scholars program straight from college. What are your thoughts?

I don't think it hurts to try! I just want you to be prepared that if you are not accepted, it is due to lack of professional experience and that you could be a good candidate for a top school in a few years. In fact, with your credentials, I have no doubt that you could find a business school program that would accept you. My concern is that it wouldn't be a top program, but, that if you waited, you would be able to get in at a much "better" school, make sense?
