please help me out !!!

by g4mat » Sun Dec 11, 2011 11:50 pm
Hello,
I have taken my GMAT thrice and my scores are 530, 550 ,600 (Q44 V29).
I am looking to apply before the second round deadlines and giving my GMAT once again on 31st of December.
I have some questions for you regarding my GMAT 4th attempt.
I have booked a date and have doubts whether to give it or not.
Please motivate me and tell me that my score can be improved.

Many people tell that you must analyze your previous attempts before you give your next.
For my first two attempts i really don't recollect what went wrong. To be honest i don't have the memory of how i gave the exams.

And for my recent attempt i could figure out some of my weaknesses.
1) I don't organize while solving quant and always end up confused. I somehow end up taking more time on few problems. I lack confidence to solve many of the other problems. I have been trying from a very long time but am unable to break the 44- 45 range for quant.I feel am slow on quant. How can I increase my speed and accuracy.
2)During my verbal I just felt so lazy that i felt like guessing and moving on. I tried self talk to motivate myself but again i did not perform to the best of my ability. I just could not concentrate. At one point in the exam I threw my hands in despair. I did all the mentioned trick of closing my eyes and concentrating on my breath, and of talking to my self during and before the exam.
3) For my verbals i did not apply most of the concepts for SC which i had learnt.
I was not in-charge of the situation and at one point was feeling what the hell am I doing. Why am i not able to concentrate or answer correctly. I knew i had to stay calm and focus on each question as it comes, but it turns of there is a lot of difference between knowing and doing. Though I was calm and had managed to score decently on my MGMAT exams-the top two scores were 680 and 660-i was not able to apply the same concepts on my actual exams.
4) I was very tensed during the verbal and was not not applying any concepts.I was not able to comprehend most of the stuff. I was just clicking on answers which 'seemed' right. I was not confident.

I just have less than 20 days. I want to improve my score by 60 - 80 points. I have all the material required to prepare, have finished it twice and have practiced enough. I feel there is some psychological problem that is stopping me from achieving my score and am unable to figure out what is that.
I am a very creative guy. I was in the top 3 of my class through out my school life but then there was a downward trend when i started my Engineering. And that trend still continues. I know I am intelligent and creative but I guess both these qualities are not just enough. How can i use my creative side to crack this exam. I feel GMAT is more biased towards the left brain.

Please advice me as to what are the other non study stuff i can do so that i can build my stamina, focus and ability to push myself to the best of my ability.
I meditate, work out and eat healthy food. I know it sounds funny but i feel so helpless most of the time. I know GMAT is not the end of life but it can make my life. So please help me out.
Thanks for reading.

Regards,
G4mat

Work on inequalities, co ordinate geometry, statistics, set theories and rate problems. Inequalities play the main role in moving from 44 to 47+. MGMAT books/mocks and flash cards are the only way to improve all these. Make lot of flash cards. Try to get OG10 somewhere in the net and you can find lot of problems.
2)During my verbal I just felt so lazy that i felt like guessing and moving on. I tried self talk to motivate myself but again i did not perform to the best of my ability. You can try writing notes. You know how the scratch pads are in actual exam. Use the last 5 columns for each ABCDE and mark a tick/cross/round for right/wrong and doubt for each question. Advantages are you won't feel tired or lazy, you won't lose concentration just like solving quants. Write notes for CR and RC. For CR write down conclusions and RC the main point of each paragraph and whatever you want. All these can help you to keep in track and concentrate.
3) For my verbals i did not apply most of the concepts for SC which i had learnt.

GMATPrep SC is quite very difficult compared to MGMAT SC and even the OG. Follow the above method to mark a tick/cross/round for each question and each choices you will be able to concentrate more.
4) I was very tensed during the verbal and was not not applying any concepts.I was not able to comprehend most of the stuff. I was just clicking on answers which 'seemed' right. I was not confident.
Take mocks with essays and buildup stamina else you can't make it easily.

You haven't posted your GMATPrep scores. +/- 50 points from that score. If you are not confident, Its better to reschedule as it is going to be your 4th attempt.
I meditate, work out and eat healthy food. I know it sound funny but i feel so helpless most of the time. I know GMAT is not the end of life but it can make my life so please help me out.
GMAT is not the end of life. Don't feel bad. Read some posts in I just Beat the GMAT and get some motivation. You can work on other aspects of the application process - essays/interviews n all. GMAT score is just an entry point.
Getting defeated is just a temporary notion, giving it up is what makes it permanent.

here are some thoughts.

here's the link to my thursday videos:
https://www.manhattangmat.com/thursdays-with-ron.cfm

for "organization in quant", check out the video from Dec 1 of this year (one of the most recent recordings); it is a whole 1.5-hour treatment of exactly this topic.

the single most important video you can watch on that page is the february 4 video (backup methods). those methods -- all by themselves -- could probably get you more than halfway to 51 from where you are. together, they can solve between 1/3 and 1/2 of all the problems on the whole test!
to be able to use them, though, you will have to kill your instinct to look for the "textbook" way to solve every problem, and instead try to find AS MANY WAYS AS POSSIBLE to solve practice problems.
2)During my verbal I just felt so lazy that i felt like guessing and moving on. I tried self talk to motivate myself but again i did not perform to the best of my ability. I just could not concentrate. At one point in the exam I threw my hands in despair. well, it seems there are some issues that you must handle here before you go back in to re-take the test.

you aren't going to get the nervousness to go away, so you shouldn't try. instead, you should put those feelings to work for you.
think about the days when you've been the most productive in your whole life. on those days, were you stressed out? yes! of course you were! the difference is that the stress, on those occasions, was "good stress" -- the kind that you put to work for you and used for extra energy.
the secret is to take the stress -- which you ARE going to feel -- and put it to work for you, in the same kind of way. there's no point in trying to get rid of it, because you won't. use it to help you instead.
I just have less than 20 days. I want to improve my score by 60 - 80 points. I have all the material required to prepare, have finished it twice and have practiced enough.
"finishing the material" isn't the point. the point is to study in ways that increase the flexibility of your thought process.
* have you been solving quant problems in more than one way?
* for CR problems, can you make your own, extra correct and incorrect answers to the problems? can you make up your own arguments that work in the same way as the one in the problem?
* if you are reading an article (from a magazine or whatever), can you write your own RC-type problems about it, with answer choices like the ones on the test?
* when you encounter strange constructions in SC, can you use them in your own sentences?

if the answers to these questions are not yes, yes, yes, and yes, then you are not practicing in a way that is optimal.
I know GMAT is not the end of life but it can make my life.
this is a pretty strong statement. do you have specific plans for what you'd do with an MBA?
i hope your answer to this question is *not* "i want an mba so that i can have better career prospects". instead, your answer should be of the form "i want an mba so that i can network with _____ people in _____ industry, and then use it to find ______ specific type of career in ______ field, doing _____." if you cannot fill in all five of those blanks, instantly, then you shouldn't apply to business school yet.
if you can, then you are on your way to a good start -- and you can use those answers to help you focus and stay in some kind of mental equilibrium.

hey Ron,
Thanks a lot for your reply in the post. I appreciate it a lot.

I saw the organization in quant video. It is very helpful. I ll try to apply the strategies in my exam.
I am yet to see the back up method video.

I really liked your advice on how to use my stress to work for me. I just need to acknowledge my stress and let it be rather than get more tensed about it. I ll try to make my stress help me(hopefully :)). This is the best advice I could get and I cannot thank you enough.

Also, many of the tips on practicing in an optimal way could be helpful for many students who are in the process of GMAT preparation. I don't think I would be able to apply it at this stage.

Also regarding my creative side. Let me know if you have some advice as to how i can use my creative side to help me.

Thanks again for your advice and tips. I hope they help me improve my scores.

G4mat

thanks for the kind words; i'm glad you found my advice helpful.

i did find a bit of irony in the following:

--> if your "creative side" is sufficiently powerful, you shouldn't need any help with this question!

Hello g4mat,

Firstly we would say that stay positive and such anxieties are common during exam preparation
time. Juggling between work and studies is tough so you need to define a significant time for your
GMAT preparation. Sometimes taking few days off work for preparing for the GMAT can help a
person tremendously. If you have time this may not be a bad idea. Take practise GMAT tests to see
how you are doing.

There are various ways you can use to practise for your GMAT. You might need to change your
practise style and try this combination to provide you flexibility and different styles to practise so
it doesn't get monotonous.

It could be combination of-

1-Books- Books like- The Official Guide for GMAT Review, The Official Guide for GMAT Verbal
Review, The Official Guide for GMAT Quantitative Review etc could be used.

2-Online Study Guide: Websites like Knewton, Grockit etc provide you with practise questions
online.

3-Smart phone applications- Kaplan, Veritas etc offer applications to prepare for GMAT on your
smart phones
