C) partly because of their steers acquiring certain characteristics

The meaning is distorted in this version in that it incorrectly conveys that the breeders use crossbreeding because of their steers acquiring characteristics, rather than in order to acquire characteristics.

D) partly because certain characteristics should be acquired by their steers

This version is not so bad, but I guess supposedly this one is flawed because the point is not that steers should acquire characteristics. The point is that the breeders use crossbreeding in order to acquire characteristics in the steers.

The supposedly correct meaning is itself a little weird, by the way. I don't think that normally people say that the breeders themselves are acquiring the characteristics, but anyway, I guess we can still determine which choice is supposed to be the OA.

E) partly to acquire certain characteristics in their steers

This one makes the most sense and the structure is well organized.

In recent years cattle breeders have increasingly used crossbreeding, partly to x and partly because of y.

Hi Marty ,

Thanks for your reply.

Reason to pick the option E is because

In option C uses of gerund (ACQUIRING) can also be a reason to eliminate the answer. If yes, then please explain why?

In option E uses of infinitives (TO ACQUIRE) can also be a another reason to select the answer? If yes then please explain.

If my above point is true , then please explain why did we choose infinitives over gerund?

Please explain and correct me if to in wrong way.

Many thanks in advance.

Saying that E should be chosen over C because E includes an infinitive and C uses a gerund does not make sense.

The gerund in C works fine where it is in the sentence.
