In B, which seems to refer either to the First French Empire or to 1813, implying that either the EMPIRE or the YEAR was called the Battle of Leipzig. Neither is the intended meaning. In 1813, the Sixth Coalition attacked Napoleon and the First French Empire in the Battle of Leipzig, the largest conflict in the Napoleonic Wars.
A. In 1813, the Sixth Coalition attacked Napoleon and the First French Empire in the Battle of Leipzig, the largest conflict in the Napoleonic Wars
B. The Sixth Coalition attacked Napoleon and the First French Empire in 1813, which was called the Battle of Leipzig and which became the largest conflict in the Napoleonic Wars
C. In the largest conflict in the Napoleonic Wars, in 1813, the Sixth Coalition attacked Napoleon and the First French Empire in the Battle of Leipzig
D. 1813 saw the Battle of Leipzig, the largest conflict in the Napoleonic Wars, in which the Sixth Coalition attacked Napoleon and the First French Empire
E. The Battle of Leipzig, the largest conflict in the Napoleonic Wars, was a conflict between the Sixth Coalition and the First French Empire in 1813
Eliminate B.
In C, in the largest conflict...in the Battle of Liepzig implies that the largest conflict was PART of the Battle of Liepzig.
The original sentence indicates that the Battle of Liepzig ITSELF was the largest conflict.
Since C doesn't convey the intended meaning, eliminate C.
In D, which seems to refer to the Napoleonic Wars, implying that the Sixth Coalition attacked the First French Empire in the NAPOLEONIC WARS. The intended meaning of the original sentence is that the Sixth Coalition attacked the First French Empire in the BATTLE OF LEIPZIG.
Eliminate D.
In E, the largest conflict and was a conflict are redundant. Eliminate E.
The correct answer is A.

Hi GuruNY,
I couldn't understand your explanation for C. In a way all the prepositional phrases are conveying information, so how are they redundant ?

In the Battle of Leipzig serves not as an adjective modifying the First French empire but as as an ADVERB modifying attacked.agarwalva wrote:

Mitch Please can you explain this
IN WHICH EVENT did the Sixth Coalition ATTACK Napoleon and the First French Empire?
In the BATTLE OF LEIPZIG.
Context makes it clear that in the Battle of Leipzig is NOT serving as an adjective modifying the First French Empire.
WHICH First French Empire?
The First French Empire IN THE BATTLE OF LEIPZIG.
If in the battle of Leipzig is an adjective, the implication is that there are OTHER First French Empires -- a meaning that makes no sense -- since by definition there is only ONE First French Empire.
Thus, we know that in the battle of Leipzig is serving as an adverb modifying attacked.
