A. The maternal copy of Nesp55 may encourage the mice to take more risks on behalf of the group, whether that risk involves looking for food, finding a nest, or defending the group.
B. Whether that risk involves looking for food, finding a nest, or acting in the defense of the group, the mice may be encouraged by the maternal copy of Nesp55 to take more risks on behalf of the group.
C. The maternal copy of Nesp55 encourages mice to take more risks on behalf of the group, whether that risk involves looking for food, finding a nest, or the defense of the group.
D. Whether looking for food, finding a nest, or defending the group, the maternal copy of Nesp55 may encourage the mice to take more risks on behalf of the group when doing such activities.
E. The mice may be encouraged by the maternal copy of Nesp55 to take more risks on behalf of the group, whether that risk involves looking for food, finding a nest, or acting in the defense of the group.

It's A IMO.

B. Modifier is not proper ("Whether that risk.., the mice"). Also it's in passive voice (Although its not an eliminating criterion always).

C. Bad parallelism ("whether that risk involves looking for food, finding a nest, or the defense of the group")

D. Modifier is not proper again ("Whether looking for food, ..., the maternal copy of Nesp55"). It should modify the mice instead of maternal copy.

E. Although there are no grammatical issues, its a little wordy. Firstly, its in passive voice. Secondly, "acting in the defense" is too wordy. Instead, you can use a single term "defending". GMAT prefers to make use of concise terms when those are available.

Please explain.

Official answers are correct because they are official. Do not make a habit of questioning why an correct answer is correct. You will only loose your sleep and gain nothing.

To answer your question only option D doesn't contains the risk as a pair, but D is obviously wrong, there are strong modification errors and construction is questionable. Since no such splits are available do not dig further on that line. We all are learning new things every day from OA's

anywaz, i think all options carry more errors than just the sing. plural problem i see.
Wonder if Ron or Stacey were here to resolve the confusion.

no need to be personnel dear, we all are learning be it kudos or no kudos...in case you have any specific issue we may discuss, the point I tried to made is official answers are normally free of errors, after a lot of pondering we will go and agree yep it was technically ok, at least most of the time, and 100% of the time in real gmat questions, no one yet has found any flaw in their published materials, and likely you will not.

since this is an mgmat questions, I can not claim the same, but you may pm Ron or stacey and they should respond. hope its ok

I thoroughly agree with you on that. Maybe I sounded like a noob saying there is error other than mentioned.
But I was asking for the concept I was lacking.
