Gmat material

by sudipta.nitdgp07 » Tue Dec 06, 2011 2:46 am
In my first attempt I scored 560 only( Q 49 and V19).
Actually I took too much time in Reading comprehension and couldn't complete the verbal section properly. Now I want to retake the exam in September, 2012 with proper preparation. Please suggest me some good study materials so that I can raise my score by 100-150 points.

How much time did you prepare? What are the books you studied for the first attempt?
Your quant score is good. You can easily get Q51 in your next attempt. Try only hard math questions. There is quant 700-800 pdf available across. It has mix of appx 1000 ps and DS questions. A few of them are really tough to the extent what you can get on any test day. I solved it completely and I loved it.

This tells us that you are not very good at RC. How do you read RC? How much time do you read a long passage and a short passage? How much time do you take for answering RC question? Which RC questions trouble you most? inferece? main point? or other? Can you understand the structure of the passage? Do you take notes? There can be plenty questions to analyse. You need to ask these questions to yourself. Try 1 or 2 passages daily without any fail. Get yourself used to stucture of RC passages and stylistic/professional english writing which we,indians, are normally not aware of.
Improve faster reading and compression skills. Learn to pay close attension to only the important content and to ignore and skim through not so important content. Refer to Mgmat RC book to know how to deal with Gmat RCs
And about managing time properly, here is a good article by stacey, which might be of your interest.

You have more than 6 months time for your second attempt. I would say 150 point rise is definately possible if you are determined and focussed enough towards your target.

Satish, first of all I would like to thank you for your reply. It was really helpful to me.
I started preparation one month prior to the exam. I know I can definitely improve in quant
section but verbal section seems to be difficult to me. I think my reading pace is very slow.
I feel comfortable in SC portion. But, I cannot manage time properly while solving RC and CR
questions.

Two things:

1) CR:
Unlike SC, CR can not be nailed by just cramming rules.I do not know whether you are aware, but I would like to tell you that there is a great book available for CR. It is power score CR bible. This book explains each CR question type and comman wrong answer traps really well. It did help me understand the basic error traps and reach not only just to the correct answer but also to the correct answer more quickly.

I used to take 3 to 3.5 mins to solve CR prob on an average when i started my prep. However, Now I can manage it infact with improved accuracy in 2 min to 2 min 30 sec. I solely give the credit to powerscore bible. It is big book of around 300 pages but would eventually pay off in the end.

I have the book. I can mail you incase you need it.

2)RC:
I am glad that you could figure out your area of concern in RC.
I think you should check/measure your reading speed. We should atleat have reading speed of 250 words per min. There are techniques on how to read and comprehend fast. Again, there are books for this too. I dont exactly remember the name of the book. I can check and let you know later. I suggest you check your speed once. If the your speed is considerably low, it is better if you could work on reading and comprehending techniques for some time as you have ample time for your exam.

Raising your score by that much is easier said than done, but here are a few suggestions:

-CR- Powerscore CR Bible
-SC- Manhattan GMAT SC Guide
-RC- Aristotle Prep RC 99
-Math- Total GMAT math and gmatclub tests
