At first glance one would think that the sentence is checking for idiom as ----- as . But having a closer look proves this assumption wrong .

In option C as much as would mean comparison between the advent of computer-based recording and "ping-ponging . But that is not what the intended meaning is .

Another important thing to note is the use of time indicator PRESENT PERFECT has not been used . So we need some thing in the sentence that would indicate that things started in PAST and continues .

Only one option dose that B . "as much since "

SINCE tells us that after the invention of "computer-based recording" the technique of "ping-ponging" was not used much .

Option D and E also express the idea but we have a far better option B as compared to D and E .

Please correct me if I am wrong .

As I have said before we need to look for the meaning of the sentence .

The intended meaning is : The technique of "ping-ponging has not been used enough as it was used before the advent of computer-based recording.

And this meaning is not conveyed b y option E that says :

The technique of "ping-ponging has not been used enough because of the advent of computer-based recording.

See the difference in meaning .

Look at the following usage of "as much as"

1. Help yourself to as much of the ice-cream as you want. (to indicate whatever amount you wish)
2. These exercises can lead to as much as a 20% drop in blood pressure. (to indicate this or almost this amount)
3. As much as I hate to, I must finish this book report tonight. (to indicate no matter how)
4. Peter as much as told Anna she was not wlecome. (to indicate nearly the same as)

In the sentence quoted however, "as much" is used to indicate the number of times the technique of ping-ponging has been used. It is not used to indicate a comparison.

We use "since" when we refer to the time when the action started, for example: last year, last semester, the invention of plastic, the beginning of mankind, etc. Thus (B) clearly conveys that the technique of ping-ponging has not been used as much (enough/as many times) since the advent of computer-based recording.

Hope that helps.

Hi arpita,

You say "as much" is used to indicate the number of times the technique of ping-ponging has been used. I thought much was used only for uncountable noun. as you say, as much is to indicate "the number of times", which is countable noun.

Moreover, you just said about the usage of as much as. You haven't talked about " AS MUCH ". You Mean, in some cases, AS MUCH AS has the same meaning with AS MUCH???

could you help me explain this? thank you

Yes of course you are correct. "As much as" shoud be used only for unountable nouns. I am sorry if I have confused you.

"Moreover, you just said about the usage of as much as. You haven't talked about " AS MUCH ". You Mean, in some cases, AS MUCH AS has the same meaning with AS MUCH??? "

Notice both "as much" and "as much as" refer to some unspecified quantity. However, the way they are used are different.

I have already indicated some uses of "as much as" in my previous post.

Most students tend to think that "as much" has to be followed by "as". That is clearly not the case.

You would have also come across expressions like "I like her just as much". Although there is a comparison with say a Becky/ Linda/Anna; it is implied.
