Deciding on B-Schools

by Vj41 » Wed Aug 29, 2012 10:42 am
Hello,

I'm having difficulty in deciding on which B-Schools to apply in the first round for Fall 2013. I'm looking at pursuing an MBA in IT/Operations Management.

Following are the schools I've zoned in on for first round applications based on my research and profile. I presume I'm being a bit over-ambitious and would really appreciate some feedback on this.

1) USC
2) UCLA
3) Carnegie Mellon (Tepper)
4) Cornell (Johnson)

Profile:

GMAT : 700 , V - 38 , M - 48
Years of work experience - 6 years at the time of application as a Systems/Business Analyst with Emirates Airlines Dubai.
CGPA - 2.7

Thanks very much.

Regards,
Vijay

Is your 2.7 CGPA converted to US standards? Assuming it's out of a 4.0, it's significantly lower than the average GPA of incoming students at the programs you're considering.

With that said, remember that MBA admissions is holistic - and deficiencies in certain parts of your application can be compensated for by strengths others. For example, your work experience sounds quite solid and I'd be interested in learning more about any extracurricular activities, interests/hobbies and leadership.

Other schools with strong operations management to consider: Georgia Tech, UT-Austin, UNC and Duke.

Thank you for your response Marc.

My CGPA was roughly converted to US standards. I have a 6.75 / 10. My degree was a B.E. (Honours) in Computer Science from BITS Pilani in Dubai.
Will the rigour of my course be considered as well in the application selection process ?

Thanks again.

Regards,
Vijay

Of course. When it comes to evaluating a candidate's academic qualifications, admissions officers will consider: GPA, rigor of curriculum and rank (if provided). If your school did not rank, admissions officers will, in other ways, pit your academic record against those of your peers to better understand your overall performance.

Vijay,
You may not be using the right conversion tool. We work with TONS of Indian folks, and frankly a 6.75 is MUCH better than your 2.7.

Now, to give you a full evaluation I'd have to know a LOT more about you and your work experience and well, everything else too! But very roughly, your school choice seems like a good solid one for R1. a bit ambitious maybe, but that never hurt anyone right ?:)
Plus you can keep your options open for R2.
