expert, pls help, BUT SUPPLEMENTING

The Iroquois were primarily planters,// but supplementing//
their cultivation of maize, squash, and beans with
fishing and hunting. ,
(A) but supplementing
(B) and had supplemented
(C) and even though they supplemented
(D) although they;supplemented
(E) but with supplementing

IN above question, why A is wrong. though I choose the oa, I am not sure why A is wrong.

in A
"but" as preposition means "besides"
"but" as adverb mean "only"

both meanings are logic and correct because "both" in either of 2 meanings can go with a participle and I see that both A and D are right

why A is wrong.

The use of "but" creates a fragment in the second part of the sentence, there is no subject.

"but" can work as adverb and so means "only". in this case, "but" modifies the participle "supplementing". we have

Main clause +participle (with adverb)

this structure is correct.
