Timber wolf population

by abhijit_ghonge » Sat Jul 23, 2011 11:44 pm
A wildlife expert predicts that there introduction of the caribou into northern Minnesota would fail if the density of the timber wolf population in that region is more numerous than one wolf for every 39 square miles.
(A) would fail if the density of the timber wolf population in that region is more numerous
(B) would fail provided the density of the timber wolf population in that region is more
(C) should fail if the timber wolf density in that region was greater
(D) will fail if the density of the timber wolf population in that region is greater
(E) will fail if the timber wolf density in that region were more numerous

I will post the OA later.

IMO D

Construction Type is:

If clause (present tense) then 2nd clause (future tense)

In Op D is same as above just the order is reversed.

I will go with D.

Although I'm not sure on when to use will vs. would.

B. seems wordy, and passive
C. should is inconsistent with the meaning of the sentence
E. 'were' is the wrong tense

A vs D

I don't know the rule on would vs. will, but I chose D because "is greater" is more concise than "is more numerous"
