My pick is A.
2-3 split and THAT is correct usage for introducing the necessary clause in the sentence here. SO B,C,D is out
E - that many had feared earlier in this year by many is awkward and wrong

Well the green parts suggest a "Simple Present Tense" structure.
A. that the economy will avoid the recession that many had feared earlier in the year and instead come[Correct]
B. in the economy to avoid the recession, what many feared earlier in the year ,rather to come[Use of 'rather' changes the meaning of the sentence]
C. in the economy's ability to avoid the recession, something earlier in the year many had feared, and instead to come.[It should be 'the ability of economy']
D. in the economy to avoid the recession many were fearing earlier in the year, and rather to come
E. that the economy will avoid the recession that many had feared earlier in this year by many, with it instead coming[Too many 'many']
IMO A

Can some one explain why that is important here and not in the sentence below?

Thanks,

Vineet

The first trenches that were cut into a 500-acre site at Tell Hamoukar, Syria, have yielded strong evidence for centrally administered complex societies in northern regions of the Middle East that were arising simultaneously with but independently of the more celebrated city-states of southern Mesopotamia, in what is now southern Iraq.

I had the same query and am still not sure of the use of THAT .

But you should see this post and read the reply from Ron , he too dont seem to be much sure about use of THAT.

Can someone please explain why the past perfect tense was used in the sentence. Wouldn't it be more grammatically correct to use the simple past instead?
"that the economy will avoid the recession that many had feared earlier in the year and instead come" indicates that the fear occurred in the past before another action happened in the past.
but "that the economy will avoid the recession that many feared earlier in the year and instead come"
suggests that they had fears until the current gains occurred.
Thanks!
