Need Help in SC

Hi,
I am preparing for GMAT (I want to give the exam in Jan end). I have almost completed CR and basic grammar rule. I am satisfied with my performance in CR but in SC there is no improvement.
I am going for the answers that sound right instead of applying grammar rules. However while doing the SC bit, I noticed that there are only few rules that GMAT SC tests us on, to name a few :
1) Subject verb agreement
2) Correct tense
3) Parallels in sentence
4) Tricky words like between/among double/twice, good/well etc
5) Ambigous sentence (like use of "it" where it could be confusing)
and some more.

I would request experts to tell me what should I do to improve my SC performance (I have MR SC and Painless Grammar by Barrons apart from this I have OG verbal review, OG and Kaplan workbook for practice).

To be specific, I want to know:
1) What are the topics/kind of errors that I need to look for in SC
2) How to improve overall performance in SC
3) What are most frequently occurring grammar errors in SC.

I hope I will get an expert advice on this one.

Hi Purnima,

You are right. The GMAT tests very few rules of English grammar. In addition to the 5 you mentioned, the GMAT also tests:

1) Modifiers
2) Pronoun usage
3) Idioms

The only way of improving SC is practicing as much as you can and read explanations of the errors you made carefully. Read MGMAT SC guide as many times as possible.

Hi Purnima,

I think going for the answer that 'sounds right' is the reason why you haven't shown much improvement on SC. Go through the Manhattan GMAT Sentence Correction guide, solve the SC questions in the OG by using the grammar rules you have learnt and after solving each question, take some time to analyze the solution carefully(both the right and wrong answer options).

And to add to what zorya suggests, return to the OG questions from time to time in order to stay familiar with the test's usage of English, not just in underlined sections of SC questions, but in the entire sentences. Once you have mastered the common topics listed already, you will be turning your attention to less common errors and idioms.

I would also recommend that you check www.e-gmat.com out. I took this course and found it to be very useful. It is designed for non native speakers. It is one of the recommended courses on the forum. go through their preview and see if it works for you.
