Use of because is incorrect. A verb denoting state is required such as being. Rules out A and B.

Also, no referent of it and they in A.

C - Role of it is not clear. use of will is incorrect when coupled with being

E - use of will is incorrect when coupled with being

Correct - Being X does not make a plant more likely to become Y i.e. choice D
