Hi,

I'm struggling with determining what MBA programs I have a shot at. I have a bit of an unusual profile:

720 GMAT (94th%) 47Q (77%) 41V (92%) 6.0 AWA
2.67 GPA at GW University in Economics - I struggled in college with a reasonable explanation of personal challenges.

8 years of work in education helping to start a charter school doing non-profit business management, teaching, and fundraising. Strong recommendations from employer. Proven excellence within my job function with industry leaders.

It is hard to balance my GMAT and GPA and hard to weigh the influence of a non-traditional career for potential MBA. Any thoughts?

Hello,

I have several points that may be helpful, not in any particular order of priority:

1. The GMAT will somewhat mitigate the low GPA, because it's strong overall and also is more recent, thus reflecting your recent/current conditions.
2. That said, the GPA is still quite low, and you could consider taking a course or two and earning an A to demonstrate ability to excel in the academic environment - your GMAT verbal score is a little low, so try to do a relevant quant course. If you won't finish the course(s) before you apply, you can discuss it in an optional essay, state any grades to date on homework and tests, and say you'll send the transcript when complete.
3. Write a succinct optional essay straightforwardly describing the reason for the low GPA.
4. One strategy that's helpful when you have an unusual element in your application such as this is to apply to a lot of schools, as many as you can, since the idiosyncrasy takes away some of the ability to calculate response.
