Weaken Question - BTG practice Question

by dazzle » Tue Nov 02, 2010 9:01 am
With the decline of predators, such as wolves and coyotes, that used to keep the deer population within certain limits, deer have increased in numbers until they cannot feed themselves in the forest alone but must forage on open rangeland in competition with cattle. Thus, in areas where forest borders on rangeland, deer hunting is an essential activity.

This argument would be most seriously weakened if it could be shown that
1. deer hunters are not concerned about the prosperity of ranchers
2. wolves and coyotes do not prey upon deer only
3. deer and cattle do not eat the same plants
4. deer hunting is popular even in areas where the forest does not border rangeland
5. the deer population may someday be hunted out of existence

IMO C

In support of the conclusion that deer hunting is essential, the argument states that, "deer...cannot feed themselves in the forest alone but must forage on open rangeland in competition with cattle."

If deer and cattle do not eat the same plants then the deer are not in competition with the cattle. Answer C attacks a premise of the argument.

I would pick A of the stated options.

C says deer and cattle do not eat the same plants . But this is exactly contrary to the stated premise.
I dont see any one of the options a better fitment than A

A is irrelevant. We are not looking at people who hunt deer for sport, we are looking at hunting deer so that they will not interfere with the cattle. Being in competition with cattle for the space is not necessarily the same as being in competition for the food. C is correct. If they aren't eating the cattle's food, why would we care whether they are foraging on the same rangeland?
