What do you mean? You are lucky to be left with your underwear to take the exam. You are given nothing more than an erasable board and a pen. There is a big brother camera recording all you movements.
LMAO.
OP is asking whether such Q's come up a lot on the exam.
Atlantic,
You mistook it for whether they are permitted on the exam.
I liked your UW analogy.

I don't know about the real exam, but from what I've seen on practice exams (about 10 at this point), I would have to say:
You might see 1 or 2 functions questions,
About 1 or 2 formulas questions,
About 4 to 6 VIC questions.
However, it also depends on the level of difficulty of each question. For example, you could be asked to solve profit, distance, percentage, amount of a job done, etc. These questions would probably have numbers at the 300 to low-600 level qustions, but will then contain variables as you move towards mid-600s and above.

don't underestimate the difficulty of the gmat questions. to this day, i still remember the first question i got on my real gmat. it was something with rates but everything was in variables such as x, y and z and all the answer choices were in x y and z....so the most efficient way to solve this problem was to plug in numbers. similar to official guide but a little harder since you were on a time constraint and also the question was modified. since that was the first question it must have been a 500 level question for quant. i got it wrong
....i was too nervous.
