mensuration !!

hi all
for ma information i stuck in ths problem althu i blv it s pretty easy
where it says :
a square wall is covered with square tiles, there are 85 tiles altogether along the 2 daignols
how many tiles are there on the whole wall??
please if u can draw n show steps i w be more thn grateful

I'm not sure about the part in red...if the Square tiles are placed along the diagonal then how is it possible to cover the whole square wall with square tiles...????

I'm getting 924.5 UnitSq as answer. If there are 85 tiles on each diagonal then the answer will be 1849.

Hi,
Let each of the square tile is of side length be 1unit. Number of tiles along both diagonals is 85. So, each diagonal has 43 tiles and the length of the diagonal is 43.sqrt(2). So, side length of the wall is 43. So number of tiles required is 43^2 = 1849.

let squares be of dimension 1*1
and a be the side. Thus number of squares = a*a
no. of squares on a diagonal =a
no. of squares on other = a
But they intersect at a square (i.e. one square is shared by both)
thus 2a-1=85
a=43
a^2 = 1849

With 85 tiles in the two diagonals, there are 43 tiles along one diagonal.
Thus total no. of tiles = 43^2 = 1849
