Your thoughts on my progress?

by nehs » Tue Mar 08, 2011 6:34 am
I have been studying for a few weeks now and my GMAT test date is fast approaching - 2.5 weeks to go. Although, I have managed to improve my VErbal score from 20(real test in Sept 2010) to 32-33(MGMAT Practice CATs and GMAT prep test), My CR accuracy is still very very low. I get only 30% of the Questions right. I'm not sure whatm ore I can do here. I have bought 2 books for CR - MGMAT CR and Powerscore CR bible. Bot hare great book, no doubts on that, but, the books don't seem to transclate into any strategyfor me. I'm a non-native English Speaker and still managed to improve my RC and SC with a lot ofo efforts. Not being able to improve CR is actually really demoralizing to me.

My GMAT practice scores are as follows:
MGMAT CAT 1 - 530 40Q, 22V Jan 2011
MGMAT CAT 2 - 540 33Q, 34V Jan 2011
MGMAT CAT 3 - 590 42Q, 30V Jan 2011
GMAT prep 1 - 630 43Q, 34V Feb 2011
MGMAT CAT 4 - 590 - dont remember breakdown Feb 2011
MGMAT CAT 5 - 630 43Q,34V taken 2 days back

I'm not sure what my progress has been...any thoughts on what I could expect in the real exam? I need a 630 for a sure admit in my target school. However, I'm pushing myself for a 680 so that achieving 650 will be very easy on the real day assuming conditons like feeling sick, lack of sleep , bad day etc!

Thank You...and I welcome any perspective that you guys can provide.

There is actually a lot of strategy involved in CR. do you know the basic question types and what each one asks you to learn from reading the passage. You should also be predicting the answer before you look at the answer choices, again that prediction will be based on the type of question you are looking. The answer choices are not there to help you and if you use them as your primary thinking tool on CR your score will suffer. So the basic strategy should be:

1. know what type of question you are answering
2. read the passage for the specific information needed to answer that type of question
3. predict what the answer will be (this is not the same as coming up with the correct answer - a prediction is more general).
4. eliminate answer choices that don't match yours

if you are having trouble coming up with a strategy on your own consider consulting a tutor who can help you just on the parts that are difficult for you.

Best of Luck

Becky,
I see your point now. However, I'm unable to guess any general answer on harder questions(650+ level). My accuracy in SC and RC is around 80% on OG questions including very hard questions, Princton review Bins, MGMAT practice questions etc. Does this mean that this CR weakness will most likely translate into a very low score( sub 600)?
