Hi,

I have given 4 kaplan mocks and have got scores around 650-670 range. There were two scores in which my individual section wise perecentiles were 85 in Quants and 58 in Verbal and in the other i got 80 in Quants and 78 in Verbal yet my score was 660 in both. I am not sure if the scoring pattern is correct for Kaplan but even if it is I need some suggestions for improving my scores and break the 700 barrier. I have identified my weakness and it seems Critical reasoning and RC in Verbal. Although I get around 70-80% of CR questions correct in practice(OG12/10 & kaplan practice material) but the accuracy goes down to around 30-40% in the Mocks. Assumptions and weakness are the two topics I am struggling with. For Quants I am performing almost consistently and getting around 85 precentile. Can anyone suggest me how can I improve on CR and also get a bit higher score in Quants. Any good resources for CR would help me a lot in my prep and analysis.

Hi Gaurav,

Percentiles are a measure of how you perform relative to other Test Takers, NOT how well you perform relative to the test. So your performance might stay the same while your percentile changes. Those practice CATS gave you the score that you earned, so if you want to raise that score, then you'll have to make some adjustments to earn those missing points.

When is your official GMAT? While I can point to some resources to help you raise your score (and many of the other posters on this site can offer their own advice on that subject), you'll need time to adapt HOW you handle GMAT questions. Incorporating new tactics takes time, so the amount of study time that you have will be a factor.

Thanks Rich for clearing my doubt on the scoring pattern. I haven't taken the GMAT date yet so I still have good amount of time to improve on my strategies. I have tried a couple of them in CR but did not find them useful. Let me know if you have suggestions to improve on the topics I am lagging(CR and RC).

Hi Gaurav,

I am no expert or GMAT wiz, but just trying my best to do well on the GMAT. I have similar experience with the kaplan tests. My accuracy dropped like anything in CR on the Kaplan tests(30-40%).Also, I was getting similar scores (640,660,650) on the Kaplan tests. I did some research on the CR questions I was getting wrong, and found that Kaplan's CR questions are not really a good representative of the real GMAT questions. By this, I don't mean that the tests are no good; Kaplan's tests surely help in time management and quant practice. Also, verbal section exposes you to various tricks used on the GMAT, but surely don't trust the scores completely.

I will suggest you to go for your first GMAT prep test and see how you do on CR. I am sure after giving your first test,you will understand what I mean. I saw my CR accuracy jump up in the GMAT preps to 80% (it dropped badly in SC though to 30% :( )

In general, I have seen that the best source for verbal questions are the GMAC's resources (Official guide, Verbal review, GMAT preps). Quality of the verbal questions you practice matter a lot to raise your scores.
