My green book is still in the mail so I can't look at the problem, but I can't see how either of those calculations can be equal to 96. Just multiplying them together shows much larger numbers.
When I factor down to the prime powers, I get (3)(2^5) which does equal 96.

another way is, look at the above and try to cancle out the factors they put in for you. Gmat cannot ask you to factor that down in less than 2 mins, so u can try to factor the numerators and see which ones come out
