Need Advice and Profile Evaluation Please

by Artus » Fri Nov 06, 2009 2:09 am
Hi, this is my first post here but I am not new on the forum, it helped me a lot to get my 710 on the gmat yesterday.

So first, thanks to all of you.

Now, here is my problem.

I am currently in a Top 10 B-school in France, I have just finished my 4th year with good grades that offers me the possibility to do my last year in another B-school and obtain a diploma of both.

Here are my possibilites:

Germany - European Business School
- 600 (GMAT) / 104 (ibt TOEFL)
US - University of Cincinnati - 600 / 100
US - Georgia State University - 600 / 100
US - University of Arkansas - 600 / 80
US- University of Dayton - 580 / 80
UK - Strathclyde Graduate Business School - 550 / 105
UK - University of Bradford - 550 / 93

With the US program I will obtain a MBA, with the others a Master in Management.

What do you think of those MBA and MBM programs ?

And now the real question...

I have three options:

- Do an MBA program above
- Do an MBM program above
- Do 1 semester in Barcelona and my last semester in intership.

I am really confused right now cause I read on the forum that if I do a "bad" MBA I won't be able to postulate for another.

Any advice will be appreciate.

Here is my profile:

French Male 22y
GMAT: 710 (44/42/6)
TOEFL: 117
GPA: 3,6 or more

High School:
I got my High school degree (with international option) in an french international school

Undergraduate:
Equivalent of a Bachelor in Economics in a French university

Graduate:
a top 20 European Master in Management (major in corporate finance, minor: strategic management and value creation)
+ (another Master in Management or Msc ?)

Working Experience:
1 year in the private banking worldwide direction of a Big french Bank.
(I am currently working there during my "gap year")
6 month as wealth manager (internship)

Activities:
Practising taekwondo for 10 years:
- black belt and 2nd dan
- 1st in French University Championship
- 2nd in French Championship
- teaching to kid from 4 to 12 for 5 years
(I had to stop because I had to leave for my studies..)

My hobbies are kind of limited cause I still practise 5 times a week.

Member of the Sport Department in my B-scool
- Captain of the volley-ball team
- Played in the Football Team

What makes me different ?

- First of all, my sport carrier
- I refused to enter in the Taekwondo French Team in order to continue my studies (cause Taekwondo doesn't pay at all in France)
- Maybe my background, I read on an article that the fact both my parents don't have a high school diploma and work as hell to help me paying my studies, could be a positive point to add

My Top MBA ranking:
(Columbia, Wharton, HBS, Stanford, INSEAD)

Why an MBA?

Because I really want to work in private equity but in france if you are not from HEC it become really hard to get an internship... So I think that a Top MBA could help me to break in the private equity area anywhere in the world.
I already had the opportunity to work in collaboration with the Private equity Department for Big clients and hope that during my next 4 year in private banking I will be able to work as much as possible with the Private Equity Department, to gain experience and maybe some contacts to.
Or should I do my MBA next year ?

Can I be a good potential candidate for a Top MBA in 4-5 years considering the fact that I will probabliy have 4.5 years of WE in Private banking as my current boss his really satisfied with my work and wants to keep me in the private bank ?

I know this is a bit long but I tried to be as precise as possible...

thank you by advance

Dear Artus,

Congratulations on your GMAT! You are correct that if the degree you would earn next year is viewed as equivalent to an MBA, then you will not be able to earn another MBA later. So, I think you need to think carefully about what you do in the coming year. The school options you noted for your 5th year are all fine schools, but they are not ones that most people will recognize nor do they garner attention in rankings. Thus you need to determine if that is important or not for you. Can you achieve your career goals attending one of these schools? You note you want to work in private equity, so it is important to evaluate if these programs will give you the education and resources to make that career path attainable.

Good luck,
Lisa

Hi, Thank you for your reply.

I really don't think I will be able to have a great carrier in private equity without a Top MBA. As you said, those school are basically "unknown" espacially in the US, country I would love to work in. So a Top MBA would definitly open some doors in Europe and maybe even more in the US.

So I think I will not do a "bad" MBA next year but My real question is:
" Regarding my profile, do you think I will have a chance to enter a Top MBA in 4 years? And If yes, do you think doing a double diploma in one of those "unknown" school could be a plus or a disadvantage ?

Thanks by advance Lisa

Sincerely

Artus

You do have a competitive profile for a top MBA program in terms of GMAT and GPA. Over the next 4 years, you need to build your professional experience and participate in selected extracurricular activities to round out your profile. In terms of another degree, it is neither an advantage nor a disadvantage, in my opinion. However, it can weaken your profile if you do poorly academically or do not have a solid rationale for obtaining the degree. Once again, just be sure that the degree you earn will not be viewed as an MBA or its equivalent since that can preclude you from applying to business school in the future.

Lisa

Hi Lisa,

thanks again for your consideration.

I have taken into consideration all your advices, that is why I will do my double diploma in Strathclyde. This diploma will be a Master in Management specialized in finance and accounting. It will enlarge my financial background in order to be more competitive on the Private Equity market.
So I really think that this will be a plus.

Regarding my Extracurriculum:
- Is the fact that I only have one extracurriculum activity a "bad point"?
I can justify this by explaining that a High level in Sport is a full time commitment.
Despite the training, I am passing a Federal Diploma in order to be officialy a Taekwondo coach (Activity that I have already done for 4 years as a volontary coach)

- Last thing I forgot to ask: My parents did not managed to get a high school degree, because they had to work very young to help their parents. I read on an article (can't remember the source) that it can be a plus for an MBA candidate to mention his background to show his motivation and his merit to reach a Master Degree and even a Top MBA.
Is it true ? Should I mention it on an essay ?

Thank you by advance for your help,

Sincerely

Artus

Much like work experience, it is not the quantity of extracurriculars that matters, but the quality. So, the fact you have been highly involved and a coach makes your involvement with Taekwondo of a high quality. I would not worry too much that you only have one EC in that regard.

Some schools do ask about your parents' educational and professional background. How much bearing this has, if any, on your evaluation is debatable. I don't think it has much, but it can go to show a level of determination and perseverance.

Hi,

Thanks again for your time,

I really appreciate your advices.

Regarding what you have said, I think that I will be a good potential candidate if my first 3/4 years of work offer me the possibility to show my managerial and leader skills.

Your opinions and advices were more useful than those provided by my school so thanks again.

I will definitly recommand you to everyone I know looking for an MBA consultant.

Sincerely

Artus
