How are my chances to get in?

Hi, I am an applicant from Uzbekistan. I want to apply for B-school for 2018 fall intake, so can you evaluate my profile?

Education: Tashkent IT University, GPA 3.7(90%)

Work Experience: Working part time since June 2016 at private IT company in Uzbekistan, and started and managed renovation process of their main product. Besides, acting as a project manager for two start-up mobile app.

My main interest is Finance, so this months started working as a junior trader an only Prop Trading firm in Uzbekistan.

Tests: I am preparing for GMAT, but haven't taken an official one, highest mock test result is 630, but I am sure I can increase it to >690 till December.

My choices are Wharton, Stern, Olin, Foster, Ross and Kelley, so what are my chances of getting in?

Hey there,

First of all, great to hear from you!

We don't see that many applicants from Uzbekistan, so that will start you off as a unique candidate. It wont be enough maybe to get you into top schools, but it's a good thing,

For the rest, I would love to help you out, without more info it's gonna be hard. Where do you work? What do you do? How quickly have you advanced? Do you have any leadership? What are your great achievements? Do you have notable community service or extra curriculars? Why are you applying? What are your ST and LT goals?

All of these will play important roles in your evaluation.

I can say though that if you can get above a 690 that would be great, and your list for starters seems nice (although it can be discussed). The only other thing I have to add is that if you take your test in December there won't be enough time for you to prepare your applications for this season, so if you need more time to get the best possible score, you can take it.

Top business schools will definitely be attracted to your background, and you're right to suspect that the GMAT will be a key factor in bringing you into serious consideration. The move from IT Project Leadership to Finance is a good step as well -- shows that you're serious about your post-MBA goals.
From an admissions perspective, some of the other questions that will play a key role in admissions will be your goals -- why do you want/need an MBA from a top US school to achieve the next step in your career? and where are you headed long-term? Where do you plan to have an impact? as well as your global perspective to date: have you studied or worked outside of Uzbekistan? Where do you hope to be located post-MBA?

These are not small questions, because they help business schools assess how much you know about the process and what the basis is of your commitment. If possible, I'd recommend planning campus visits this fall, so that you can experience your goal schools first-hand. This will help you a lot to get a sense of the personality of each community, as well as demonstrate commitment to your admissions application readers.
