9 is odd, so square [9] = 3 * 9 = 27
6 is even , so square [6] = (1/2) * 6 = 3

Therefore, square [9] * square [6] = 27 * 3, note here 27 is odd so it is equal to square [27], by definition of [m] when m is odd.

The correct answer is D.

Hello Anurag,

Am sorry, but I don't follow the 'square' concept and don't get why the answer is not 81, would you mind breaking the explanation down further please?

Thank you,
M

Since 9 is odd, square 9 = 3 *9 = 27

Since 6 is even, square 6 = 1/2 *6 = 3

so square 9 x square 6 = 27 x 3 = 81

since he's putting the answers in squares u gotta look for the answer equivalent to 81.

square 27 = 27 *3 = 81 <= Bingo!

162 is also an acceptable answer, is it not? (although irrelevent since it wasn't an option)

I'm not getting why the answer is not 81 either.
