One of the problems with answering this question with concrete tips that it is so dependent on your own unique attributes. Age or an additional degree (unless it improves your GPA) are not particularly important. Personal revelations could be useful for essays, but alone would not do a lot to set you apart.

In my own experience with clients, significant volunteer activity over the previous years with leadership components may be the best way to improve your application - unfortunately that requires already having that experience if you're applying this year. A work background that involves management and not just IT is helpful, but again, either something you have or don't have.

For concrete application tips, I think the essays are crucial to set yourself apart. You want to communicate everything that is unique and great about you that won't be communicated through stats alone. Showing thoughtful introspection, vision for your future goals, and revealing some of your personality is all great.
