MBA vs. Masters

by tahitiboy » Wed Apr 28, 2010 9:17 am
Dear all,

I have read all the discussions in the forum on which schools offer a better MBA program.

My question is what is the difference between a masters degree (in management/ finance/ HR) compared to MBA degree. How would MBA outweigh the other or the reverse. The only thing I know is the tuition fees for MBA far exceeds a master degree.

Thanks to all.

Its really all about recruiting. In terms of what you learn in the classroom, I don't think an MBA is all that valuable. You don't really learn that many things that will directly be applicable to business. The value is in the networking and soft skills. An MBA is essentially just a barrier to entry to jobs at elite firms. That is why you will hear so many people say if you can't go to a top 20 program then don't go. If your goal is to get a job with a consulting/banking firm or to get a job in marketing or general management, then you have to go the MBA route.

Mostly agree -- MBA is most critical for that first job out of grad school. After that (say at 35 yrs old) performance & experience are weighed more heavily. MBA is also good, frankly, if you don't know what you want to do. As you learn more about the industries/content, you can adjust your career search accordingly..say from brand management to strategy consulting.
