If a certain grove consists of 36 pecan trees, what was the yield per tree last year?

1. The yield per tree for the 18 trees in the northern half of the grove was 60 kilograms last year.

2. The yield per tree for the 18 trees in the eastern half of the grove was 55 kilograms last year.

Solution:
To calculate the yield per tree, you need to know the relationship between the yield and the number of trees for the entire grove.
Let us first consider (1) alone.
The yield per tree of only the northern part is given.
Obviously, this is not sufficient to answer the question.
Next, consider (2) alone.
Again, this is providing information on only the eastern part.
So, even this is not sufficient to answer the question.
Lastly, combine both the statements together and check.
We still come to know nothing about the remaining southern and western parts of the grove.
Hence, both statements together are not sufficient.

The correct answer is (E).
