Captain's promise

by suchoudh » Sun Jan 24, 2010 4:43 pm
The captain promised that he would lead the team to the final despite their poor start to the season.

(1) he would lead the team to the final despite their poor start to the season
(2) he will lead the team to the final despite its poor start to the season
(3) despite its poor start to the season, he would lead the team to the final
(4) despite their poor start to the season, he would lead the team to the final
(5) despite its poor start to the season, the team would be led by him to the final

Please give this a shot and please post your reasons. I will post the answer later.

I think 3 (C) is correct

1 is wrong because the pronoun "their" is incorrect. The team is a collective noun which is singular, so using a plural pronoun is incorrect.

2 is wrong because of "will". You need to use the conditional tense and not the future tense.

4 is wrong because of the pronoun "their"

5 is wrong because it is in the passive voice.

I wondered it would have been 2..

My line of reasoning....Antecedents are supposed to come before the pronoun tries to refer it....

But in 3.. despite its poor start to the season, he would lead the team to the final..

its----team
&
he---captain..

Moreover "promised " means it has higher degree of certainty & usage of " will" shall complement it.

Can u plz post the OE??

I too have a similar line of reasoning for 2. Good details provided by gmatmachoman.

IMO C

B : Incorrect because when future is seen from a past point of view --> would should be used instead of will

Predicting future from the past point of view...Use conditional would rather than will..

would implies sm sort of uncertainty that you will always have when predicting a future...
But if you use will..then something is surely gonna happen when you are yourself not sure while predicting.
C is correct...
For more on this kinda question...refer OG12 problem # 139

Why i can't be A. As it is subjunctive form, so "would" should be used and there is the modifier problem in C,D and E

in 3- is'nt the modifier ' Despite its poor start to the season' expecting the 'team' to be placed after the comma...

Though 5 sounds passive, i feel 5 is correct.

Please correct me if am not thinking correct.

Or if Passive is a Problem, i will go for 2

What is the source???

(1) he would lead the team to the final despite their poor start to the season
=> Big problem is "their"

(2) he will lead the team to the final despite its poor start to the season
=> We need "would" to indicate future action in past tense

(3) despite its poor start to the season, he would lead the team to the final

(4) despite their poor start to the season, he would lead the team to the final
=> Big problem is "their"

(5) despite its poor start to the season, the team would be led by him to the final
=> Passive and heed "he" first
