Hello,
Can you please assist with this:
What number of dollars did the Rodriguez family spent on clothing last month if the
Rodriguez family spent money only on food, housing, and clothing?
1) Last month the Rodriguez family spent 40% of their income on housing, and their
combined expenditure on food and clothing was $200 more than their expenditure on
housing.
2) Last month the Rodriguez family spent two-thirds as much on clothing as they spent
on food.
OA: C
I was trying to solve as follows:
1) Let their total income = x
So, b + d + f + g = 40/100(x)
and a + c + d + e + f + g = 200 + b + d + f + g
=> a + c + d + e + f + g = 200 + (40/100)(x)
We want, c + e + f + g = ?
In-suff.
2) c + e + f + g = 2/3 ( a + d + e + g )
In-suff.
I was stuck at this point onwards. Can you please assist?
Thanks,
Sri

Hi Sri,What number of dollars did the Rodriguez family spent on clothing last month if the

Let C be Cost Spent on Clothing.
F be Cost Spent on Food
H be Cost Spent on Housing
T = Total Income => T = C+F+H
We need to Find C=?
Statement1: H =.4T and F+C=200+H
From this we get T = 1000 and H=400 and F+C=600
We dont know C.
Hence Insufficient.
Statement 2: 2/3F =c
Nothing about T is mentioned.
Insufficient.
1+2:
substitute 2 in 1
we will get F =360 so C=240
Hence sufficient.
Answer is C
