IS?

by vinay1983 » Sat Sep 14, 2013 11:33 pm
Australian embryologists have found evidence that suggests that the elephant is descended from an aquatic animal, and its trunk originally evolving as a kind of snorkel

to suggest that the elephant is descended from an aquatic animal and that its trunk originally evolved is the correct choice

What makes usage of "is" correct here?I am surprised by this. I have never seen such construction.
I have heard has/had descended from or descended on, but never "is descended"

Please explain the discrepancy. The question is from OG 13 SC

Here, descended serves as an adjective.
X is descended from Y means that X and Y are connected by a blood relationship.
