Help Please - OG -10 Q#205

by goelmohit2002 » Sat Mar 07, 2009 10:37 am
Hi All,

I am not able to comprehend the reason given in OG-10 for kicking out option "E" in below Q#205 of OG-10. Can somebody please help why "C" is preferable over "E" ?

The peaks of a mountain range, acting like rocks in a streambed, produce ripples in the air flowing over them;the resulting flow pattern, with crests and troughs that remain stationary although the air that forms them is moving rapidly, are known as "standing waves".

A. crests and troughs that remain stationary although the air that forms them is moving rapidly, are

B. crests and troughs that remain stationary although they are formed by rapidly moving air, are

C. crests and troughs that remain stationary although the air that forms them is moving rapidly, is

D. stationary crests and troughs although the air that forms them is moving rapidly, are

E. stationary crests and troughs although they are formed by rapidly moving air, is

Experts, please help.

This is what OG says for discarding option "E" of Q-205 of OG-10.

"Choice E uses the correct verb form, is, but it incorrectly introduces a dependent adverbial although clause into a prepositional phrase (with crests ...)."

Can somebody please explain in a bit simple words what is meant by the above. In addition to above issue, is there any other reason too on the basis of what we can kick out "E".

Thanks
Mohit

Do you think E is bringing the contrast you need?

If those

stationary X although they are formed by rapidly moving air- there is no contrast and by air makes is passive.

while in C 'that remain stationary' defines the contrast.

I am not an expert though

Quoting Erin from testmagic (He is definitely an expert)
The OG is basically trying to say that it sounds funny if you attach an "although... thing" clause to a "with... thing." I'm simplifying here, and trying not to use grammatical terms, but that's really what OG is saying.

For example:

Carl, with his new shoes and hat although they weren't very expensive, entered the room proudly.

Doesn't this sentence sound funny? This part:

although they weren't very expensive

is trying to modify (or explain a bit more about) this part:

with his new shoes and hat

But it doesn't work, does it?

It doesn't work because the "although... part" should be connected to a complete idea (i.e., a sentence), not just a "minor point" in the sentence.

To correct the example I just gave you, we would need to rewrite the sentence entirely:

Although Carl's new shoes and hat were not very expensive, he was very proud of them.

Hope that helps!

Also E is wordy. Its better to say 'stationary crests and troughs' than 'crests and troughs that remain stationary'.
Plus as hemant mentioned E is passive.
