SC Grail Q23

by tarunajwani » Thu Nov 17, 2011 7:37 pm
A group of students in an American village has been selected for testing a new lowcost
electronic notepad being built around a new class of green, power-stingy
microchips that use a fraction of the electricity of current computer chips

A. has been selected for testing a new low-cost electronic notepad being built
around a new class of green, power-stingy microchips that use a fraction of
the electricity of current computer chips
B. have been selected to test a new low-cost electronic notepad being built
around a new class of green, power-stingy microchips that use a fraction of
the electricity used by current computer chips
C. has been selected to test a new low-cost electronic notepad to be built on a
new class of green microchips, which are also power-stingy and which use a
fraction of the electricity used by current computer chips
D. have been selected for testing a new low-cost electronic notepad being built
around a new class of green, power-stingy microchips that use a fraction of
the electricity of current computer chips
E. has been selected to test a new low-cost electronic notepad being built
around a new class of green, power-stingy microchips that use a fraction of
the electricity used by current computer chips

(between E and C I am getting really lost, because the difference between them is Notepad being built with notepad to be built. I am so confused as to how do you understand what would be the correct option because the statement isn't indicating the mood or tense of the sentence which it makes it clear what to use ).

Explanations to question will be appreciated !!!

Thanks

P.S - I know its a stupid question, but i am trying to understand this once and for all from scratch

An explanation to the correct answer would be highly appreciated !

Good question - and nice work narrowing it down to C vs. E!

The right answer has to be E. The biggest flaws in C as I see them are:

1) "also power-stingy" doesn't make sense because there's not a first definition that would make "also" necessary there. You wouldn't say "John is also president of the finance club" unless you first said "in addition to being secretary of the consulting club" or something else that sets up a two-part sentence. "Also" just doesn't work in C.

2) "Which are also...and which use" is redundant - the subject of both clauses is "microchips", so the extra "which" is clumsy and redundant. It should just say "which are power-stingy and use a fraction" or, better yet, "which are power stingy, using a fraction...".

E is trying to trick you by using that word "being" that GMAT students have been (incorrectly) taught to fear. "being" is fine here - it describes "notepads" by mentioning that they are currently being built in a certain fashion.

Hi Brain,

Thanks. I have a follow up question:

In addition to being secretary of the consulting club, John is ALSO president of the finance club - this makes lot of sense. Thanks for pointing.

Generally I have seen 'also' construction esp AND ALSO constructions are wrong. Do you also have the same opinion? If no, could you pls share some insghts when AND ALSO constrcutions could be correct.

Secondly, in addition to points you mentioned about C, it changes the meaning of original sentence as well. Let me explain below what I intend to say:

A) notepad BEING built around a new class of green, power-stingy microchips - I think being signifies that the development acitivity is already on

C ) notepad TO BE BUILT on a new class of green microchips - TO BE BUILT signifies that the notepad will happen in future

Is my understanding correct?

Thanks

" a new class of green, power-stingy microchips that use a fraction of the electricity used by current computer chips "

Hi Brian, what about the role of comma here? It make "power-stingy micro chips" become modifier for "new class of green"?or it just use as necessity to separate two adjectives?

In C to be built seems building it in future, but the group has already been selected to test. so, WRONG.

In E it says chip is being built and the group has been selected to test. Quite Meaningful.

IMO E.

Eliminate B and D immediately without reading them due to incorrect verb tense "have" since the subject "group" is singular.

Eliminate C because it's awkward and "also" has no place in that phrase.

Between A and E, E is the better choice because "electricity of" doesn't make sense. Electricity is "used by" the device as stated in E.
