You won't need to calculate the statistic. All you really need to know is what Variance MEASURES - a measure of the dispersal of the terms of a set around its axis (same as standard deviation).
A big Variance means that the terms are spread out around the average of the set.
A small Variance means that the terms are clustered around the average of the set.
a Variance of Zero means that there is NO dispersal - that all the terms are equal to each other, and equal to the average. The sets (5,5,5,5) or (100, 100, 100, 100, 100, 100) both have a variance of zero.
The above also applies to standard deviation.
