by sanju09 » Thu Feb 09, 2012 4:05 am
There are certain number of quarters, dimes, and nickels only in Mary's piggy-bank, which total to $9.75. How many quarters does Mary have in her piggy-bank?
I. There are 25 dimes and as many nickels as are the dimes and quarters put together, in Mary's piggy-bank.
II. There are 45 nickels and 5 more dimes than quarters, in Mary's piggy-bank.

Let, n=no. of nickels, d= no. of dimes, q=no. of quarters.

Stmt 1.
d=25
n=d+q =>n=q+25

Since d=25 then 0.05n+0.25q=9.75-(25*0.10)

So 2 equations and 1 vairables. Sufficient.

Stmt 2.
n=45
d=q+5

Since there are 45 nickels,
9.75-(45*0.05)=0.10d + 0.25q

Again 2 vairables and 2 equation. Sufficient.
