"Known as" Versus "Known to be"

Hi All,

Could any one help me in identifying the precise difference between the two words,"Known as" Versus "Known to be", with example.

Hi Uva,

These two options essentially mean the same thing, so I'm hard-pressed to come up with a difference in usage. The GMAT might include one or the other in some form of parallelism (which would dictate the usage), but I don't believe that I've ever seen this explicit rule tested on a live GMAT.

Where did you come across it?

Thanks for your reply.
I saw the same in Manhattan GMAT SC Guide 5th Edition.

The book have listed some of the pairs of "Cousin" words and expression. Among them one is
Known as (named) vs. Known to be (acknowledged as).

There is no example provided. So,I am not able to get correctly.
