According to a 1996 survey by the National Association of College an University Business Officers, more than three times as many independent institutions of higher education charge tuition and fees of under $8,000 a year than those that charge over $16,000.

A) than those that charge
B) than are charging
C) than to charge
D) as charge
E) as those charging

Can someone explain how to resolve this? OA is E

again i am not sure about my explanation. but here goes nothing....

i think ' as many ' cannot be used along with 'than'...thus eliminating the first 3 choices...and the usage of the verb is wrong in option d

Hi Sankruth,
It is E because "as many .. as" is the right construct for comparing two clauses, in general when you need to compare two clauses then one must use "as" or "as .. as" form, i.e here as many .. as

this ensures both logical as well as structural parallelism.

hope this helps.

I am not sure, why there was no more discussion on this question!!!

Ans has to be D

In E, 'charging' is not parallel with non underlined part 'charge'. 'Those' is problematic.

I disagree with the OA posted here. Check here for my reasoning:
