That the new managing editor rose from the publications soft news sections to a leadership position is more of a landmark in the industry than her being a woman.

That the editor rose from X to Y is more of a landmark than ???

You can read it further like this:

That she rose is more of a landmark than ???

Parallelism, the underlined portion MUST begin with "that"

That she rose is more of a landmark than that ???

Between D and E

Though "rose" is past tense, we are stating a general fact here - The editor is a woman.

Also, it IS a landmark, so it is justified to say she IS a woman.
