A) were renowned warriors, although they also crafted
B) had been renowned warriors, although they also crafted
C) were renowned warriors, and also crafted
D) was renowned warriors, although they also crafted
E) were renowned warriors, but also crafting

Looks A to me..

Reason -- (I'll start from the ones which are easy to Eliminate)

Option D --incorrect usage 'Was' should be replaced by 'Were'
option E -- Awkward... 'crafting' is incorrect.. [somehow I think the usage should be 'Not only... But Also' to maintain the parallelism]
option C -- Same as E.. not parallel.
option B -- Incorrect usage of Past Perfect Tense. It should be simple past tense.

Option A is the clear winner :)
