Hello,

My name is Suman and I have a total of 6.8 years of ERP product dev exp at Oracle Corporation. My goal is to advance in same industry(software) with an MBA from ISB.

- By education i am a computer science engineering graduate from reputed university in AndhraPradesh.
- I have an exp of 2 years in leading a team of 3 ppl, in terms of work resp and people management.
- I have filed 12 patents in application dev area
- Submitted a thesis on Artificial Intelligence in IEEE.
- I play guitar as a hobby and have cleared grade-1 exam from Trinity school of music.
- At work, im known for my "out-of-box" thinking and hard-work.

To sum it up, im not too smart kind of a person but more of a focused and hard-working kind of. I can say i have been performinig decently well in my current role.

Now my cons, i tried gmat 3 times now but failed miserably (580,580,530). But i am still very much interested in ISB-MBA and willing to retake my gmat correcting my mistakes.

But have two big questions, only by having a knowledge of which i can put my efforts again . They are:

1. Will ISB still consider my profile at all owing to such a bad gmat record ?

2. I have a home loan of 15 Lakh rupees. Will the associated banks still consider me eligible for loan ?
3. Even if i still could, given my age-group (im 29) and amount of experience and the fact that i already have a loan, do you suggest an MBA now would still be a good idea for me. I know this one is more of a personal preference, but i wanted to get a advice from a general trend or statistics perspective.

Any inputs on these questions will help me immensely in my descision. Kindly reply.

Regards,
Suman

Hi Suman,

Apologies for the delayed reply.

Yes. Your low GMAT score is a big deterrent for ISB. We suggest that if you are planning to apply push your score to atleast a 640 or so to even stand a chance.

Otherwise your profile looks pretty solid. Experience of leading teams, filing 12 patents ( we know it is a big achievement) will really differentiate you.

Dont worry at all about education loan. ISB normally ties up with many banks and loans are provided at low rates ( better than market rate). Many students already have home loans. You might not get entire amount of Rs 23 lacs as loan but 15-17 lacs should be possible.

As far as "Is MBA worth it?" question is considered... well from your papers, patents etc you look a pretty rock solid technology inclined person. Post MBA work really requires one to be street smart and little technical knowledge is required. So, unless you are ready to adapt and feel that you will enjoy that dont go for it.

We suggest talking to someone senior in your company who understand your nature, preferences and the work profile that you are handling and can give a better suggestion.

Of all MBA programs, ISB weighs GMAT the most heavily so your GMAT score will make acceptance there especially difficult.
