If I have 3 months to study for my GMAT, and I am planning to use the free GMATPrep software what would your answer be to the following scenario ?

1. At Day 1 of my 3-month study plan, I take the CAT#1 from the free GMATprep software to determine my current level
2. After this I actually study all the necessary concept and brush up on my skills.
3. And say at Day 83 in my 3-month study plan (a week before the actual test), I am planning on taking CAT#2 from the GMAT Prep Software - Now, is it a good idea to re-install the GMATPrep software so that I can get newer set of questions, compared to taking the CAT from the GMATPrep software that I installed on Day 1.

would it matter re-installing the software or not ?

GMAC does not update the questions on the free GMAT tests very frequently. You can post a question to the "Ask the TestMaker" in this forum and ask if GMAC plans an update in the next few weeks.

Assuming that this is not time for an update, you can still take the first test again. No need to reinstall, just take the test again. You will see a few repeated questions but it is probably worth it to get another test (well 2 tests if you repeat each test) out of the software.

You can also get 2 new tests with the GMATPrep Exam Pack 1 (for an additional cost).

Great idea to take a practice test on Day 1. This will give you an idea of what you'll be preparing for over the coming weeks. Also, the results of this test help you gauge the amount of work required to reach your target score. As David said, reinstalling the software won't change the size of the question banks from which the two practice tests draw their questions, and you will see some duplicate questions, but not many. Hi gmat_chanakya,

Taking a full-length practice CAT to start your studies and establish your base-line score is a GOOD idea.

Planning to study for 3 months is a GOOD idea.

Waiting 3 months to take your 2nd practice CAT is a BAD IDEA.

After your first 2-3 weeks of study, you should plan on taking 1 full-length practice CAT each week. This will allow you to put your current skills to the test AND assess your pacing and endurance skills. Thankfully, there are plenty of quality practice CATs for you to purchase (or acquire for free).
