Dear Friends,

I am Edmilson Rodrigues, from Recife/Brazil. My dream is to apply to a top MBA School in the US, and I would appreciate if you can give me insights about my profile and what I should focus on to increase my chances.

I am a recent college graduate with a focus on Business (graduated in July 2011). And I have been building a profile around Social Entrepreneurship and Innovation. I won a few awards in recognition to my efforts in spreading social entrepreneurship in my university and 1,5 years ago I started my own social enteprise, Ahimsa (www.ahimsa.com.br). I also have 3 international experiences in the US and coursed Project Management at Harvard´s Extension School and scored 104 in the TOEFL exam.

But my company is not doing very well and I am considering doing something else next year. Please, what kind of work experiences I should focus on in the next 2 years to strengthen my profile and what should be my target in the GMAT exam?

Hi Edmilson

Your dream to get into a good college is certainly going to see its dawn. I find a lot of special high points. Apart from other things try working on different roles inside the company and make it a point to get fast promotions. I would suggest you to wait for three years to come with a talkable work experience.

Your social entre. should be partnered and elevated to greater levels. Try applying for schwab foundation etc. Make it sustainable.

Prepare hard for GMAT and try crossing 680. 700+ is very good.

Well your target GMAT would depend on what schools you are applying to. But anyhow I think talking about "target GMAT" is a wee bit silly, cause everyone just tries to get the higher score they can :) Know what I mean?

Sooo, what can you do in the coming years?
Get INVOLVED - Inside work, outside work, wherever. take opportunities to LEAD. Volunteer. Do community service work. Lead others wherever possible. Take extra responsibilities at work (even "small" stuff like organizing work trips). Of course getting promoted lots and quickly also helps. If you are going for Top 10 schools, maybe retake your TOEFL. You'll need a 109+ for many of them...

And that's a good start. Do well, keep focused, keep your eyes open for any opportunities, and just go for it!

Since you have time, I would recommend you retake your TOEFL again. Here is one Admissions Director's perspective on the TOEFL exam (https://www.mbaprepadvantage.com/blog/mb ... on-retake/).

I would recommend you seek work experience that is aligned with your career goals, so figure out your career goals now. Social entrepreneurship is excellent and there are multiple options. You can work directly for a social enterprise or you could even try to work for investors or in the government that works with this sector.

Good luck,
