Profile evaluation / question on GMAT score

by emamyshev » Sun Jul 01, 2012 10:45 am
Hello everyone,

Background:
My top choice is HBS - I think that I would really benefit from their bootcamp, hands-on approach to business education. Others schools I am considering are Stanford, Wharton and London School of Business.

I have a bachelor's from Princeton University in Operations Research & Financial Engineering, 3.7 GPA. I have worked for three years (come autumn) in a pharmaceutical consulting firm and have been promoted in the past year, so I have many leadership experiences to share. I am also active in my church and am a strong advocate of self-development through the arts and humanities. I speak four languages, sing opera and host recitals for my co-workers, engage in ballroom dancing and have created a book club for my co-workers. Ultimately, I want to run my own strategic consulting firm with maximum efficiency and maximum impact on the world economy, empowering people to lead meaningful lives.

Questions:
I took the GMAT last year and scored a 750: 45 (99%) Verbal, 48 (80%) Quant, 6.0 AWA. It seemed a pretty good score at the time, so I did not retake it. However, I am now wondering whether the 80th percentile in Quant will raise questions about my application / look inconsistent with my expertise in optimization and programming. Should I be concerned and retake the exam, or am I overanalyzing this? (In particular, should I spend more time preparing for and retaking the GMAT and maybe apply in Round 2 if the rest of my application is unfinished, or should I keep my current score and apply in Round 1?)

Also, do I sound like a desirable candidate for the schools listed? (Feel free to be brutally honest!)

Thank you; your input is appreciated!

Everything I've read says to take those 50-100 hours you could spend improving your score 20 points and use them to make killer essays. I got a 48 (80%) on quant as well and I went through the same back and forth before finally getting what I thought was the sound advice I just repeated here.

In terms of your candidacy--sure you sound great, but rock those essays otherwise you're just like every other ivy league overachiever. Hence, another reason to let GMAT dogs lie.

Hi Emamyshev,

Thanks for your post. You certainly have a solid profile. Your solid undergrad performance and experience in pharmacueticals are right on target for the schools on your list.

As for the GMAT, I have to agree with Machichi on this one. You have a great score overall, and your performance on the quant section is right on par with the scores the schools on your list like to see. I'm guessing you also likely had some quant classes as part of your major and you must have done well in them given your undergrad GPA - this will also demonstrate your quantitative ability to the adcoms. I encourage you to focus your time and energy on putting together solid applications for your target schools. You have very competitive programs on your list - each with it's own set of challenging essay questions. HBS has an earlier deadline this year, so if I were you I'd get started on your essays right away.

Please feel free to send your resume to [email protected] for a (free) detailed profile evaluation.

Best,

Stacey
