Profile Evaluation Help Needed!

by Bruce79 » Sat May 04, 2013 3:06 pm
I graduated from a top 15 undergraduate business program in the U.S. with honors and distinction, and I have two years of work experience as a business technology consultant at Deloitte Consulting. I recently took the GMAT test and got a score of 740. I'm wondering what my chances are for getting accepted into a first-tier MBA program. Also, which schools should I focus on for my application to maximize my chances? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Here are some additional details about my background: I double-majored in finance and accounting and had both mathematics and economics as my undergraduate minors. I took 152 credit hours of courses within four years and passed the CPA exam. My college GPA is 3.76, which I believe is a bit low. I also had some experience interning with a small online brokerage firm in the past.

Many thanks!

Hi Bruce79,

Firstly, congratulations on an amazing GMAT score! The short answer is your odds are above average at anything #4 - 12/13, average above that, and strong at anything below #13. This is also where you would be most competitive for scholarships, etc. There are numerous strengths to your candidacy including the GMAT score and your undergrad experience.

A couple of questions for you before we get into a good discussion about programs, etc.

1) What are your short and long term goals? Are you looking to continue in consulting? Tech consulting specifically? Or are you looking to switch careers?

2) How would you characterize your professional and extracurricular activities both at Deloitte and outside of the firm? Where they unique? Were they average? Were you more tech strategy or implementation? What industries, etc.? What were you involved in internally? How would you characterize those roles?

3) Are you GSAP sponsored?

Here's why I am asking these questions. The schools you should consider will shift given your goals and with your candidacy, you don't have to worry about what's in "reach". So it will really come down to where you're looking to go, where you've been, and the strength of that story as it pertains to each targeted program. With the brand of the firm behind you and some of the key metrics, you should be quite ok across most of the board.

I think we can have a really good conversation around your candidacy and hopefully you'll find it useful. Given all the moving pieces you have specifically, the more you can share the more useful our conversation will be.

If you would rather, you can sign up for a consultation below and we can talk this through on the phone - which might be easier? But either way, I'll leave that up to you!

I hope I can help!
