Consulting or Finance

by finmaster » Wed Apr 25, 2012 9:44 pm
Hi. I'm a mechanical engineer and currently I'm involved in the engineering design department of my office. I'm also a technical consultant for the procurememt department of my office.

I'm also a CFA Level 1 candidate. I missed it by a whisker (band 10) last December and hope to qualify for Level 2 this June.

I wish to know that given these credentials, which of the following should be easier in crafting a career goals story?

- Consulting

- Finance

- General management

Which of the above would be easier to link with my profile so that the story sounds the most believable?

Well, either Consulting or General Management are Functions which could make use of your previous work and experience, (meaning you can do either in your same industry more or less) so it's likely that they will make it easier for you to weave a more logical story, whereas Finance is a total change of industry, and it's basically throwing your previous experience out the window, which you can do of course, but often makes for a less convincing story.

Thanks for the reply, Jon. Actually I'm also thinking the same. In fact, I think I should use my participation in the CFA program as an added spice for my 'consulting' or 'general management' story. Something like 'I have a technical background and that coupled with an added knowledge of finance through the CFA program should make me a good choice for any consulting/general management company.".

Could you please list a few companies that I could cite as potential future employers?

Regards

I have no idea how that works. Nevertheless, I'll find out.
