Need advice on my Profile

by anukrati » Thu Mar 14, 2013 8:25 pm
Hi

Let me start with little background on my profile.

I am Indian Female of 26 yrs age.

I have taken GMAT two times-
First Time : 690 (Q49/V35)
Second Time :640.

I have done Egineering in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from state university(Uttar Pradesh Technical University).

Total Work Ex - 3yrs 3 months
I am currently working as an Operations Analyst and taking care of the Capital One Card Operations.
Earlier than Capital One was part of HSBC but as Capital One took over HSBC's US Card Services I became part of Capital One.
Including HSBC and Capital One work ex - 1 yr 2 months

Before this company I was working with Accenture as Informatica Developer for Morgan Stanley client.
Work ex - 2 yr 1 month.

I also started my own two franchisees during college and had to leave as I came over to different place to work.
So currently, those two franchisees are taken care by my mom.
I have also worked Part Time as Maths tutor for US Students along my office. (Jan 2011 to August 2012)

My Goals - To have my own startup in education industry.

MY TARGET SCHOOLS - Top 20 US Business School

Though I know that my GMAT score is on low side, and hence I will be giving my GMAT again.
I somehow feel that when it comes to Indian pool of applicant, Score, work ex and from which college you pass out matters a lot.
Also, this year I applied in Georgetown, Emory, Ross, UCLA ,NYU and CBS
And I already have got no from Emory and CBS.

My concern is - Is there way to improve my profile in coming months to make my profile apt for applying next year.
Also, if I start working on my goal right now(start working on having my own startup), will it be seen as negative in my application when I apply again for next year intake.

Thanks

Hi Anukrati,

I believe you should be realistic while shortlisting and applying in b-schools. As I can see that you have applied in highly ambitious schools and haven't taken a chance to apply in safe schools. What about your acads, GPA and undergrad institute? There are few parameters on which b-schools offer admission, like: GMAT, GPA, undergrad institute, achievements, ability to work with people, other skills etc. I would suggest you to focus on your current job right now and try to add the above mentioned attributes in order to strengthen your profile.

Let me know in case of further queries. You can PM your number as well to discuss on your profile and selection of b-schools.

Richa

Hi

I do realize that, but my main concern is if I improve my GMAT score what else I need to do to improve my profile to have a fair chance in top 20 univ.
And also starting my own startup will show as negative?

Hi Anukrati

There is no direct mantra of a "good" profile. Your current profile seems interesting to me. Things you can improve upon in your profile are:

Academic: definately on the GMAT. You have not mentioned your grades in your undergrad.

Leadership: You talked about the two franchisee u started in college. You can improve upon their financials and show a good impact here. This might be your differentiator.

Work Experience: The most important thing here is the impact you have created at your workplace and not just the number of years and the brand of the company. So, if you don't already have, focus on things which make you stand out among your peers in the organization and substantiate it well in your application. Also, start working on building relationships with your potential recommenders.

Startup: In my opinion, you working on your startup will be taken as a positive indicator rather than a negative indicator. It shows that you are clear and committed towards your goal

Hi Anukrati,

I don't see any disadvantage in owning a start-up. Also, you can focus on handling a team (small or big) or achievements at work place.
